BLURB:
Jack Vaughn is sure his life is over as he tumbles down the wooded hillside onto the deserted two-lane stretch of asphalt. Years of work ended with a single gunshot. Yet, it’s not over.
A good Samaritan stops to help him, despite the danger he poses to her.
Laine Wheeler knows better than to stop for strangers on the rural Montana highway near her home, but her conscience won’t allow her to leave an injured man behind.
What she doesn’t know is the man is an undercover ATF agent tasked with infiltrating a domestic terrorist group. His cover has been blown and helping him will put her life in danger.
Though there is an instant attraction Jack knows that beginning a romantic relationship with Laine would be both unfair and unwise, yet the farther they run the harder it gets to ignore the feelings that are surging between them.
Excerpt:
Calember stared down at the body through his night vision goggles with disinterest as the rest of his team searched the barn. They’d followed the GPS chip in Reed’s satellite phone to this position when he had failed to check in. Although Calember was surprised to find the man dead, he wasn’t at all sorry. Reed had been good for what Ripley had hired him to do, but that didn’t make him likeable.
“You think Jack got him, sir?” Harmon asked. The man pulled a sandwich out of his pack and downed half of it with one bite.
Calember watched him chew for a bit then rolled his eyes and shook his head. Standing over a dead teammate, and Harmon was more interested in filling his belly than his fallen comrade. Ripley really knew how to pick them. “Probably,” he replied. “It would be poetic justice if the doctor killed him though, wouldn’t it?” The thought was oddly satisfying and more than a little amusing. He chuckled. “Reed Harris, rapist and sadist extraordinaire, killed by a practitioner of the healing arts, and a woman. You just can’t make this shit up.”
Harmon finished his egg salad. “So, what now, sir?”
From the tone of Harmon’s voice Calember could tell the man was no sorrier to see Reed go than he was. He stared at the corpse and briefly considered giving him a pseudo-Viking funeral. But, the smoke and flames would only draw attention, and frankly, Harris wasn’t worth that much bother.
“Have Marx and Brannagan sanitize in here, take the body back over the ridge to the Jeep,” Calember said at last. “We’ll check the house and see what we can find out about our elusive doctor.”
Leslie McKelvey has been writing since she learned to write. Her mother still stores boxes of handwritten stories in the attic. Leslie read her first romance at 12 and was hooked. When her high school Creative Writing teacher told her she needed to be a novelist, she decided to give it a try. Finally, at the ripe old age of...forty-something...her debut novel, Accidental Affair finally made it into print through Black Velvet Seductions Publishing. The publisher has also contracted two more manuscripts, which will follow Accidental Affair shortly. The next story slated for release is Bear’s, so for all of you who fell in love with Jack Vaughn’s best friend, get ready. The 6’8” FBI agent saves wildlife photographer Beth Drummond’s life and loses his heart to her in the process, a journey that tests the boundaries of loyalty, friendship, and love.
Leslie is a war-veteran who served with the U.S. Navy during the Gulf War, and she was among the first groups of women to work the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. During her five years of service she was stationed at NAS Miramar (yes, Miramar used to belong to the NAVY) and was an F-14 Tomcat mechanic. While in San Diego she spent time on the carriers USS Independence, USS Ranger, USS Lincoln, and the USS Nimitz. The final two years of her enlistment were spent on Guam and her squadron frequently deployed to Japan and the Middle East.
She learned everything she knows about firearms and tactics from her police officer husband, who is a weapons expert and firearms instructor for one of the most highly-respected law-enforcement agencies in the world (and one he wishes her NOT to disclose). He is her biggest supporter and her unpaid consultant on everything law-enforcement and weapons related. She has three boys, the oldest of whom will soon be wearing the uniform of a United States Marine (SEMPER FI!). She spends her off-time (kidding...WHAT off-time?) reading, taking pictures, and sending lead down range (that's shooting, for those who are unfamiliar). One of her favorite scents is the smell of gunpowder in the morning....

ReplyDeleteInteresting excerpt, are you planing to write a sequel?
ReplyDeleteshadowrunner1987 at gmail dot com
Yes, Ami. In fact, it's already been written and its at the publisher's now. Just waiting to start the editing process.
DeleteThanks for dropping by!
Another great excerpt, thank you. I'm looking forward to reading the book.

I hope you enjoy the book as much, Ingeborg. Thanks for posting!
DeleteGREAT book!!! And YES, she's planning a sequel or two!!!!
ReplyDeletekvmatlock(at)gmail(dot)com
Bear's story is next, and Sheriff Grant Donovan's is still being written. Thanks for stopping by, Anonymous! :)
DeleteThanks for the excerpt, looking forward to this and the sequel!
ReplyDeletefencingromein at hotmail dot com
Thanks, Shannon! I hope you enjoy them both!
DeleteLooks like a great book, how did you start writing it?
ReplyDeletelyra.lucky7(at)gmail(dot)com
I had a dream about the opening scene and it just flowed from there. I don't think Maverick, Laine's wolf-dog sidekick, was part of the dream, but once I started writing he materialized and stuck. Thanks for asking, Lyra!
DeleteLove, love this excerpt. I am going to love this story.
ReplyDeleteThanks, MomJane! Calember is more a background character, but I think even those characters need some personality. He plays an important role towards the end, so he can't be a cardboard cutout. Thanks for stopping by and good luck in the drawing!
DeleteWhom of your characters would you like to meet?
ReplyDeletegalaschick78(at)gmail(dot)com
Bear. Hands down. Although if I did, I think I would end up cheating on my husband (I've already warned my hubby about this, so he's aware). I'd also like to meet Ripley, but only if there was bulletproof glass and armed guards between us. Thanks for stopping by, Gala!
DeleteSounds like a great book!

Thank you, Lena! I like to think it is, but I'm biased. I really enjoyed writing Accidental Affair, and I've read it probably a dozen times. I go back and take a look and just get sucked in. Occupational hazard I guess. Thanks again, and best of luck in the drawing!
DeleteLeslie...Your mom kept your early, hand-written stories? Do you ever revisit them? Do you remember what they were about? Maybe there's a story idea there!
ReplyDeletecatherinelee100 at gmail dot com
I actually have reread some of them, Catherine. Some of them might work as children's books, but I haven't seriously considered going that direction. Maybe I need to rethink that....
DeleteThanks for stopping by, and good luck!

ReplyDeleteI love the reference to a Viking funeral. That's how I want to go.
